Hearing Continues for Military Boat Accident
In Alameda, California, the defense lawyers for the driver of a Coast Guard boat that killed an eight-year-old San Diego boy said that the military is prosecuting Petty Officer 3rd Class Paul Ramos to avoid taking responsibility for its own lack of training and supervision.
New details about the boat accident were released during the hearing. The dead boy's father, Alan DeWeese, described the scene as bloody after the 33 foot vessel crashed into his smaller boats in December 2009.
One of Ramos' military attorneys, Navy Lt. Cmdr. Andrew Mayers, said the collision was a tragic accident that was caused largely by poor training and supervision by the Coast Guard and visibility flaws in the design of the 33 foot military vessel.
Myers said during the hearing, "It's in the Coast Guard's interest to blame my client."
At this time, Ramos is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter. Two other members of the crew are also facing charges, but were not included in this week's hearing.
