What is Asbestos?
If you work or live near asbestos, it is possible to suffer an asbestos injury.
What is asbestos? This group of minerals is easily mined and was often used in construction and automotive industries for its durability and resistance to heat. However, it was later discovered that, when disturbed, the small fibers are released into the air. If they are breathed into the lungs, they can remain there for years and cause serious health issues.
These issues include, but are not limited to: asbestosis, which causes shortness of breath, scarring of the lungs and coughing; mesothelioma, a rare cancer that affects the chest cavity, abdomen or lining of the lungs; lung cancer; and pleural plaques, which affect the membranes surrounding the lungs. Other cancers such as throat and bladder cancer have also been linked to asbestos exposure.
