Investigation into 2009 Boat Accident Concludes
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board concluded its investigation into the 2009 boat accident that took the life of an 8-year-old boy. Due to the Coast Guard's oversight, the blame was placed in the persons responsible for operating the boat involved in the crash. While the person operating the boat had good intentions - he was on his way to a call for a grounded boat - he was operating the 33-foot USCG patrol boat at excessive speeds.
As a result, the officer ran into the back of a Sea Ray, causing injuries to 4 of the 13 people on board the boat. The Coast Guard was found to be lacking an oversight system that monitors patrol vessels. To make matters worse, the officer of the day was on the patrol boat and did not tell the coxswain to slow down at any point.
