New Study Sheds Alarming Insight into Drunk Driving Limits
Everyone knows that drinking and driving is a dangerous combination, but what you may not know is that just one drink can cause you to be impaired.
A new study released by the University of California San Diego shows that a significant amount of alcohol-related driving accidents are committed by those whose blood-alcohol was below the legal limit. The study, which was published in the journal "Addiction," shows that just one drink can impair a driver to the point of causing a serious drunk driving accident.
The authors of the study, sociologist David Phillips and Kimberly M. Brewer, studied data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System, which tracks all fatal accidents that happen in the United States. By studying a ratio of serious to minor accidents, they arrived at the above conclusion. In the report, they wrote that "Accidents are 36.6 percent more severe even when alcohol was barely detectable in a driver's blood."
