San Diego Warning People of Grandparent Scam
Officials in San Diego are attempting to track down the person(s) behind the "Grandparent Scam" that has targeted dozens of elderly persons in the area.
According to District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis, the perpetrators pretend to be the victim's grandchildren, pretending to be in trouble and needing money to be wired to them. They have been successful in obtaining $141,482 over a period of two years; the money has been deposited in accounts around the world, from China to Mexico.
The callers pretend to have become involved in some sort of trouble, whether it be a medical emergency or a car accident, and request the money immediately.
