Elder Abuse More Common Than Most Think
Although it is unfortunate to think about, elder abuse in nursing homes is more prevalent than you may think.
In many cases centers are understaffed or assault simply goes undetected until a family member notices and reports it. Since the victims are the elderly themselves, they are often unable to report the abuse or are even aware that it is happening. The news is filled with reports of elder abuse, such as an 80-year-old woman who nearly became the victim of rape at the hands of her own hired caretaker.
According to Orange County Sheriff’s Dept. Spokesman Jim Amormino, families that utilize in-home caretakers should always run a thorough background check on new hires. Anyone that shows a tattered past should not be hired on by your family to take care of your aged loved ones. Even those that have an impressive resume should be checked; in the case of the above woman, her caretaker had worked in several nursing home facilities beforehand.
