Fatal Train Accident Takes Place in Union County

A fatal train collision in Union County took the lives of two people and injured several more last week.

Around 3:38 a.m. on Tuesday morning two CSX trains heading northbound collided; one train was stopped and the other rear-ended it. The impact was so great that both trains caught on fire, causing officials to evacuate several residents along Waxhaw Highway. Although these people have been allowed to return to their homes, it will be several days before the debris is completely cleared from the tracks.

The two victims of this terribletrain accident were 36-year-old James Gregory Hadden, a locomotive engineer, and 33-year-old Phillip Crawford, Jr., a conductor. Several more crew members were treated for minor injuries and later released from area hospitals.

In total, nine cars were derailed and 4,500 gallons of diesel fuel were spilled. The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Railroad Administration are investigating this accident.
