Coast Guard Honored for Saving Boat Accident Victim's Life
News sources report that one Coast Guard graduate had an incredible first day on the job after he saved the life of a fisherman.
According to the Coast Guard station in San Diego, California, the 3rd class officer was on his first day as a qualified rescue swimmer when the station received a call about a capsized vessel. When they arrived on the scene, the man jumped into the water to save the fisherman. Although the rescue took place almost a year ago, the young man was honored this month in Washington, D.C. where he was named USO Coast Guardman of the Year.
Sources say that the military member was just 22 years old when he made the daring rescue while riding on a helicopter. When he arrived on the scene, the drowning man had become unconscious and was suffering from hypothermia. Neither the victim nor his crew members were wearing life vests when the vessel collapsed.
