Family Sues Police for Suspect's Wrongful Death
After failing to provide the proper medical treatment to a suspect, a police department in the state of Illinois is now being sued for his wrongful death.
Last summer, officers witnessed a 39-year-old man take part in a drug deal. When they walked up to the man speak to with him, he ran, which prompted a foot chase. Reports indicate that the man was quickly subdued when an officer was able to taser him, rendering him incapable of movement for a short period of time.
Although the officers did ask the suspect whether he had any drugs in his mouth, even asking him to open it for inspection, they did not see anything worthy of suspicion. However, they later learned that he had swallowed the evidence, an act which was apparently caught on tape.
Now, the department is being sued for the man's wrongful death for failing to bring him to the hospital sooner. The family is arguing in their suit that the man should have been brought to the hospital after he was tasered by police.
